Despite Love Obsession being excessively sick, this seems to be Satô having quite a bit of cheeky fun. The story is a satirical swat at the media, centring on a sadistic, narcissistic reporter (Maya Shiraki) who kidnaps her own (somewhat masochistic) sister (Mariko Kosaka) and fakes a snuff-like schoolgirl porn ring purely to drive up her shitty show’s ratings.

I really wish Maya Shiraki was in more stuff. In both this and Pervert Ward, she has a powerful presence and demonstrates significant acting chops. Here, she is very different from Pervert Ward—utterly evil and obsessed rather than broken and mad. Moriko Kosaka’s casting is pretty alarming. As far as I can tell, this is the only film she’s appeared in.

She does not look like someone you’d expect to see in a pink film. Her natural, unassuming presence makes the violence inflicted on her all the more upsetting. Love Obsession features some very grim content, but it’s also just plain weird.

There’s masturbating with spoons while jam is gobbed off a spoon. Salarymen squawking at a nude woman marching about on a rooftop. Odd scenes of futuristic video calls that almost have a Cronenbergian quality. This is undoubtedly a Satô film but it’s cartoon Satô. I like cartoon Satô.
