Ryoko Watanabe is a bored housewife named Ami who throws herself into the “Madame Machiko Society Club” to spice up her marriage by making love to random men. This world of lust turns out to be kinkier than Ami thought it would be and may end up having a reverse effect on her precious marriage.

Catherine Deneuve could never! This is the Nikkatsu I want from the 1980s: glamour, depravity, and unleashed female desire. While it might not be as dreamy as fellow BDSM classic, “Girl and the Wooden Horse Torture” (1982), both are far better than the tedious “Flower & Snake 2: Sketch of Hell” (1985). Ryoko Watanabe truly smolders in her role with the perfect mix of fear and desire. She should have been the Naomi Tani of the 1980s. I’m in awe of her in this “Belle de Jour” (1967) riff. Nikkatsu is at its best with female-centered stories. You don’t have to imagine “what’s in the box” with Nikkatsu. Just what’s behind the blur!
The dom (Shinshô Nakamaru) combines the Michel Piccoli and Pierre Clémenti characters from “Belle de Jour,” but is freer and more unhinged than either. It’s so thrilling to see. 50 shades of pinku….or red all across that room.
She even has a client who was a former wrestler in real life (Thunder Sugiyama). Who didn’t have an awakening to wrestling? There’s also sexual humiliation mixed with wrestling in Nikkatsu’s “Entrails of a Virgin” (1986).

A lot of this film called back to different Naomi Tani films. The scene with the spider crawling on her skin (and exciting her) was similarly used with a caterpillar in “Female Convict 101: Suck” (1977). Than, the later leash and pup-play recalled “Flower & Snake” (1974) and “Rope Cosmetology” (1978) respectively. The brief moment where the dom has sex with her friend in front of her tied up could relate to a similar scene of denial in “Newlywed Hell” (1975). Even the “Madame club” here parallels Oniroku Dan’s “Deer Park” fantasy in his sole English-translated book “Season of Infidelity” (2010). We even have “Wife to be Sacrificed” lead Nagatoshi Sakamoto as the old man in the side story / parallel couple. Yes, I’ve watched too many of these films!
I LOVE this film. With Nikkatsu, you have to have some attraction to either transgressive cinema or kink to journey with it: into both heaven and hell. To see the wonders of the gutter beyond our sanitized modern cinema. Watching these films can confront issues with your own body. And what a journey Ryoko unties for us!
