Recensione

Wild and whacky parody of the sukeban and pinky violence genres that is a whole lot of violent, absurd fun. The story has delinquent girl gang leader Midori (or as she introduces herself: “the Invincible Midori, the Wild Chrysanthemum”) trying to live the quiet life with her friends.

There’s no peace to be had, however, especially after Midori protects Harue the Sewer Rat from the depredations of Ranko leader of the Demon Gang and procurer and muscle for the school principal. With Maki the Lone Wolf looking to challenge Midori at any opportunity and the Inagaki Gang being brought in by the principal to kill Midori things escalate to an explosive and fantastical climax.

Director Toshiya Kominami wrangles together a set of tropes familiar from the genres he’s parodying and puts them together in a kinetic melange of violence and wild storytelling. Kominami gets some great shots and most of the fight scenes are reasonably choreographed. The leads are fun and go about their business in a totally uninhibited manner.

It’s a shame, however, that the lead, Rika Hoshimi, isn’t quite as convincing as Asami and Akari Asahina, who play her two key opponents. The score is also great fun, full of some great surf guitar and chugging sub-metal. The film doesn’t get everything right and at times it is well off the mark, but it is still enjoyably senseless. It is ludicrous, violent, hyper-paced and over-acted, but works as a ridiculously fun sukeban / pinky satire.
