Recensione parte 1
Four short films based on kaidan stories by renowned writers.
1. The Arm (dir. Masayuki Ochiai)
A man infatuated by a younger woman gets permission to borrow her arm for an evening. He brings it home through mist-filled streets and has conversations with it as strange things start happening. The streets themselves are entirely CGI but look like London of the 1880’s. Very poetic and strangely intimate film with lots of creative cinematography.
2. The Whistler (dir. Shinya Tsukamoto)
A woman taking care of her terminally ill younger sister is forbidden by their strict father to marry the man she loves who went out for war. She finds a bundle of love letters for the sister sent by someone who calls themself “M.T.” and tries to figure out what they’re about. Tsukamoto himself told the press he felt annoyed that he didn’t pick the previous story for himself as it dealt with the inner mind of a fetishist, but he still pulled off a very intense and emotionally draining drama here.

3. The Nose (dir. Lee Sang-Il)
A monk living with a large deformed nose tries to save a teasing boy from a river stream but accidentally causes the death of him as his nose gets revealed. After managing to bring the boy back to life, the monk gains newfound respect from the village, but the boy starts to haunt him as a result. This one feels extremely cruel in tone and leaves it up for the audience to decide who the real monster is. Absolutely stunning symmetrical opening shot and bleak ending.
4. The Days After (dir. Hirokazu Koreeda)
A couple coping with grief after the death of their son finds comfort by pretending that a boy living nearby is their son as they look remarkably similar. I feel like each of these shorts just get progressively more depressing and this hit the peak. It’s very subtle and emphasizes silence to great effect.
In conclusion, don’t expect the typical J-horror affair of gore or jump scares with these shorts. They’re primarily stemmed in drama and do a great job at that. If I had to pick my favorite of the four, it would probably be The Arm – I absolutely love the surrealism and atonal classical music.
