HAUNTED APARTMENT is a tight little thriller featuring all kinds of ghostly things that terrorize the tenets who are trapped there. Spectral visions nightly torture them with their worst.fears and have them unable to move away due to a curse that will kill them if another tenet does not replace them. Aimi and her father are the newest unlucky residents.
This one is a lot of fun with its arcane rules giving a sense of motion to the proceedings. While it still features the image of the ghostly girl trope it brings other factors into play that elevates this above some of the other typical Asian horror fare.
One of the things I find compelling about these films is this sense of melancholy that pervades them. These are typically families that are living through a form of trauma that the ghosts seize upon, which is a common tropes in most horror films. The deep sadness in these feels more palpable due to the more surrealistic concepts. Aimi has lost her mother at a young age and her father is there but absent due to his alcoholism. The final reveal gives us a monster much worse than the apparitions in the building.
HAUNTED APARTMENT is but a minor work but its.modesty is what makes it effective. I really liked this and I’m even more compelled to stay on this Asian horror track.
