Recensione parte 1

Wanna Know How She Got These Scars?

I was expecting the full 50 minutes to be dedicated to ‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’ but only the first 16 minutes were…. turns out that ‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’ is an anthology horror film… I’m in no way complaining. I love anthology horror and every single segment of this film was superb. Teruyoshi Ishii is quickly becoming one of my favourite horror directors.

‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’ is an anthology horror film so of course we needed a horror host and who better than a monk? Well he might not actually be a monk but he’s bald, in a temple and surrounded by candles so I’m gonna assume he’s a monk. The first segment was ‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’ which featured interviews on the street with real people who talked about ‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’ legend.

The real interviews were great but didn’t help make the fictional story feel more realistic because the interviews and the fictional story were shot with two completely different cameras. In fact, the interview camera had a much clearer picture and should’ve been used to shoot the fictional segments in order to make them feel more real. This is pretty much a nitpick that only I would have and it’s really not that big of a deal.

Recensione parte 2

‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’ segment was great and involved a woman who was self conscious about her mouth (at least I think she was… no subs) so she went to the hospital to get surgery for her mouth. Unsurprisingly the operation didn’t turn out as she hoped it would and left her permanently disfigured with a freaky ass mouth that you briefly see.

‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’s’ face flashes on screen twice for a split second which made the reveal a lot more impactful than simply showing it. The woman wears a mask over her mouth in order to hide it and knowing what’s hidden underneath makes it all the more freaky. So the woman becomes an angry killer who murders the doctor who performed the operation and a couple of other unsuspecting people. It’s simple but really great and I has a lot of fun with it.

The second segment had me really confused because like I previously said at the beginning of the review ” turns out that ‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’ is an anthology horror film” which I had no idea before starting it so I went from ‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’ segment to a upbeat segment about a Mother making smoothies for her son.

Recensione parte 3

The second segment was only about 2 minutes long but still fantastic. For some reason the kid makes smoothies out of his pet cat that he sticks in the blender (happens off camera) and offers his Mother a dead cat smoothie. The smoothie doesn’t look very appetising and neither does the mess he left on the kitchen counter. His mother didn’t seem to think so either so he threatened her with a knife… that’s literally it… I loved it!

The third segment is about a man who murders a woman with a crowbar and starts to see slugs everywhere he goes. The slugs are on his clothes, in his bed, in his food and basically all around him at all times. This segment reminded me a lot of ‘A Haunted School’ which involved a girl who kept seeing worms everywhere after reading about them in a scary manga and they also appeared in her food.

The highlight of the short was when his girlfriend kissed him which filled his mouth up with slugs that he then spat out. It was super nasty but also really cool and just like the previous short, I loved it! The fourth segment was about a little girl who finds a baby in a box and brings it home, her parents say that she can’t keep it so she takes the box back outside and places it at the side of the road with the rest of the garbage and waves goodbye. It’s quite dark and I wouldn’t go as far to call it funny… it’s just kinda strange.

The fifth segment is about a little boy who likes to murder animals such as fish, hamsters and cats. The evil boy buries the dead animals in his backyard and makes little gravestones for them. This kid ends up poisoning his pregnant mother which gives her a miscarriage that he absolutely loved… dude was smiling as blood poured out of her.

The mother ends up going crazy and becomes attached to a baby doll that the kid later sets on fire so she kills him… but it’s implied that the fake baby killed him because the kid has baby handprints on his neck. I liked the fifth segment a lot aside from a scene where the kid is torturing a hamster with a stick that was partially on fire. The scene was pointlessly cruel and really didn’t need to be in the film.

Recensione parte 5

After the fifth segment, the horror host fades away… turns out he was a ghost monk the entire time……. spooooooooky!! ‘The Slit-Mouthed Woman’ was a terrific horror anthology and I recommend it to everyone. Even if you’re not the biggest horror fan it’s still a lot of fun. I’m going to be marathoning all of the ‘Slit-Mouthed Woman’ films next Asian Horror September, I can already tell that it’s going to be a fun but painful experience.
